Kremlin excludes forthcoming Putin-Trump meeting
(MENAFN) A future meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and former U.S. President Donald Trump is certain to happen, but the timing is not yet right, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in an interview excerpt released Sunday.
While a report from The Times suggested the possibility of a trilateral meeting between Putin, Trump, and Chinese President Xi Jinping during a military parade in Beijing this September, the Kremlin has denied knowledge of any such plan. Putin is confirmed to attend the event, which commemorates the 80th anniversary of victory over Imperial Japan in World War II, but no meetings with other leaders have been scheduled.
Peskov stated that a direct meeting between Putin and Trump is not only possible but ultimately necessary, particularly for concluding significant agreements. However, he emphasized that such a meeting must follow “a great deal of groundwork,” which is still ongoing.
The two leaders have held several phone conversations recently, primarily focused on efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine. Trump, who recently voiced frustration with Putin, has nonetheless expressed a desire to help broker peace.
Peskov responded to Trump’s remarks by noting the former U.S. president's well-known bluntness, but added that Trump remains committed to pursuing a peaceful resolution. He also reiterated that Putin has consistently shown a willingness to resolve the Ukraine conflict diplomatically, though he acknowledged the process will be long and complex.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin has indicated that the third round of Russia-Ukraine talks is expected to take place in Istanbul, though a specific date has yet to be confirmed.
